Optimise your energy consumption

What does energy efficiency mean?

Energy efficiency means using less energy to carry out the same task or activity. It is not only about reducing consumption, but about optimising it: making the most of every unit of energy we use, whether in a home, a business or an industry. This involves using more advanced technologies, changing usage habits and designing smarter, more sustainable processes.

What are the advantages of energy efficiency?

Adopting energy efficiency measures has multiple benefits. At an individual level, it helps save on electricity and gas bills. At a collective level, it reduces energy dependence, decreases environmental pollution and helps tackle climate change. In addition, it encourages innovation, improves comfort and can increase the value of properties or products.

What are the benefits of energy efficiency?

  • Economic savings: Reducing energy consumption translates into lower bills, both for households and businesses.
  • Lower environmental impact: Using less energy means fewer polluting emissions, especially CO₂.
  • Improved comfort: Well-insulated or climatized buildings consume less and are more comfortable.
  • Added value: Efficient properties or products are more attractive to buyers and users.
  • Access to grants and subsidies: Many authorities encourage efficiency improvements through tax benefits or direct subsidies.

How can energy efficiency be calculated?

Energy efficiency is calculated by comparing the energy that is used (useful energy) with the energy that is consumed. The higher this ratio, the more efficient the system. For example, a boiler that converts 90% of the gas energy into useful heat is more efficient than one that only reaches 70%.

In buildings, indicators such as annual energy consumption per square metre are used. In industry, it can be calculated by measuring how much energy is used for each unit produced.

How does energy efficiency help?

Energy efficiency helps to:

  • Reduce operating costs in households and businesses.

  • Comply with environmental regulations and sustainability goals.

  • Improve business competitiveness by lowering structural costs.

  • Strengthen energy security by reducing dependence on external sources.

  • Promote the use of renewable energy and technological modernisation.

What an efficient building looks like with Adymus

ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR HOMES

In residential buildings, energy efficiency is achieved through good practices and suitable equipment: high-quality thermal insulation, efficient windows, A-rated appliances, LED lighting and modern climate control systems. User behaviour also plays a role, such as making the most of natural light or adjusting indoor temperature.

INDUSTRIAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY

In industry, energy efficiency is key to reducing production costs and emissions. It can be improved through process optimisation, machinery maintenance, heat recovery systems, automation and real-time consumption analysis. It is also common to implement certified energy management systems.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN BUSINESSES

Companies can achieve significant savings by implementing measures such as efficient use of lighting, smart control of electricity consumption, employee saving policies, upgrading old equipment and energy audits. This not only reduces costs but also improves their image with clients and investors.

How is energy efficiency calculated?

The calculation depends on the sector:

  • In buildings: annual energy consumption is assessed in relation to surface area (kWh/m² per year).

  • In industrial processes: energy consumed per unit of production is measured (e.g. kWh per tonne produced).

  • In products: parameters such as thermal performance or seasonal energy efficiency are analysed.

There are standardised tools, norms and methodologies available to carry out these calculations reliably.

ISO 50001 Standard

The ISO 50001 standard sets out an energy management system for companies and institutions. Its aim is to help reduce consumption through policies, specific objectives and continuous improvement. Implementing it makes it possible to identify saving opportunities and systematically control energy use.

IPMVP

The International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) is a recognised methodology for verifying energy savings in efficiency projects. It defines how to measure the real impact of the improvements implemented, ensuring transparency and reliability in the results.

Differences between an energy label and an energy certificate

  • Energy label: A visual mark that classifies products or buildings according to their efficiency, usually on a letter scale (from A to G). Its purpose is to inform the consumer quickly and clearly.
  • Energy certificate: A technical document prepared by an authorised professional. It analyses and rates the energy consumption of a property, includes improvement recommendations, and is mandatory for selling or renting in many countries.

The label is the summary, while the certificate is the full analysis behind that rating.
