What is solar self-consumption?
Solar or photovoltaic self-consumption is an energy model in which a company generates its own electricity from solar panels installed on its premises, making use of solar radiation as a clean and renewable energy source. This system makes it possible to reduce dependence on the traditional electricity grid, lower energy costs in the medium and long term, and actively contribute to environmental sustainability.
In the business sphere, photovoltaic self-consumption has become a strategic solution to improve energy efficiency, optimise resources and advance towards decarbonisation. Furthermore, current regulations in many countries allow surplus energy to be fed into the electricity grid, generating additional economic benefits or further reducing the energy bill.
This type of installation can be adapted to different scales and needs, from small businesses to large industries, with self-consumption options with or without batteries, and systems for surplus compensation.
What types of self-consumption systems are there?
There are several types of solar self-consumption installations, and the choice depends on factors such as the company’s energy consumption profile, the space available and the savings objectives. Each type of installation can be adapted to the specific needs of each company, always seeking a balance between efficiency, profitability and sustainability. The main types are detailed below:
Several consumers share the same solar installation. Although more common in residential communities, it is also applicable to industrial estates, business parks or logistics centres. It requires agreements between the parties and a clear distribution of the energy generated.

Benefits of photovoltaic self-consumption for businesses
Photovoltaic self-consumption offers numerous advantages for businesses, starting with significant economic savings. By generating their own electricity, companies considerably reduce their dependence on the conventional electricity grid, which results in a much lower energy bill from the very first month. This cost reduction allows the investment to be recovered within a few years, especially if public support schemes or tax incentives available in many regions are taken advantage of.
In addition to direct savings, self-consumption protects companies against the volatility of the energy market. In a context of unstable electricity prices, having an in-house energy source provides predictability and cost stability, which facilitates financial planning and improves competitiveness. There is also the possibility of generating additional income if surplus installations are chosen, since excess energy can be fed into the grid and financially compensated.
From an environmental perspective, photovoltaic self-consumption contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions and to meeting sustainability goals. This not only benefits the environment but also strengthens corporate image with clients, investors and society in general. Demonstrating a real commitment to the energy transition has become a key differentiating value in many sectors.
It should be noted that solar installations have a lifespan of more than 25 years and require minimal maintenance, ensuring stable and sustained performance in the long term. In addition, incorporating this type of system can increase the value of a company’s real estate assets by providing greater efficiency and energy autonomy. Overall, photovoltaic self-consumption represents a strategic investment that combines profitability, resilience and environmental responsibility.
FAQS
Find answers to some of the most common questions
Industrial self-consumption: what it is and how it works
Industrial self-consumption consists of generating energy within a company’s or industry’s facilities for its own operational use, reducing dependence on the external electricity grid and the costs associated with purchasing energy, with potential savings of up to 100% on the variable component of the electricity bill.
When can I expect the return on investment?
The return on investment depends on each case and may vary according to some of the following parameters:
Energy expenditure: based on the company’s historical consumption and future forecast.
Amount of energy generated: the location of the photovoltaic installation, the amount of sunlight and the quality of the installation, among other factors, will determine energy generation. The greater the amount of energy produced, the shorter the payback period.
Cost of the installation: both the cost and the financial support available will be key when calculating the return on investment.
In addition, it should be noted that the payback of photovoltaic panels is usually achieved within the first 4–8 years of their lifetime, while their useful life is around 30 years. All this makes profitability high.
Do solar panels require little maintenance?
Yes, the maintenance of solar panels is simple and low-cost, but it should be borne in mind that proper maintenance helps to ensure profitability.
Among other actions, this includes cleaning the surfaces, checking the accumulators, replacing insulating seals and carrying out regular inspections for damage.
Adymus offers you an annual maintenance service that includes constant monitoring and maintenance actions to guarantee 100% performance of the installation.
Industrial consumption schemes, with or without upfront investment
There are two contracting and execution models for industrial self-consumption installations:
- EPC or “turnkey” model. In this model, the client makes an initial investment covering the full cost of the solar installation, enjoying all the energy generated with no additional costs, since the solar self-consumption installation becomes their property. It is the most convenient solution if you want to save on your electricity bill immediately.
- PPA model. Here there is no need for an initial investment. This model is based on a power purchase agreement to obtain cheaper energy than from the conventional electricity grid. The client agrees, in the long term, with a producer or supplier to purchase at a fixed price, always lower than that of the conventional grid. It is an affordable way to drive the transition towards renewable energies with zero upfront investment.
